Functional ROM

FUNCTIONAL RANGE OF MOTION

Functional range of motion measures whether a client will be able to effectively function in his/her environment. Normal range of motion may not be necessary to complete wanted, needed, or expected tasks.

PROCEDURE

Shoulder Flexion

  • “Can you raise your arms above your head?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they reach into the top shelf of the pantry?
    • Can they shut the window blinds?

Shoulder Abduction/External Rotation

  • “Can you place your hands behind your head?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they wash and comb their hair?
    • Can they put on an overhead shirt?
    • Can they scratch their back?

Shoulder Abduction/Extension

  • “Can you touch your hands behind your back?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they tuck in their shirt?
    • Can they put a belt through the loops?
    • Can they perform personal hygiene?

Elbow Flexion

  • “Can you touch your mouth?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they eat?
    • Can they brush their teeth?

Shoulder flexion/Elbow extension

  • “Can you hold your hands straight out in front of you?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they wash the dishes?
    • Can they carry objects in front of them?
    • Can they go waterskiing?

Wrist Pronation/Supination

  • “Can you turn your hands palm up…palm down?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they turn a doorknob?
    • Can they turn a key in the ignition?

Wrist extension/flexion

  • “Can you wave your hands up & down?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they tie their shoes?
    • Can they type on a keyboard?

Thumb opposition

  • “Can you touch your fingers to your thumb?”
  • Used to determine
    • Can they pick up change on the table?
    • Can they hold a pencil?

DOCUMENTATION

If client is able to perform the functional movement screen, it can be documented that client is within functional limits for upper extremity.
